Deccan Sikhs, also known as Dakhni Sikhs, are members of the Sikh community who have historically lived in the Deccan region of southern India, especially in areas like Hyderabad, Nanded (Maharashtra), Bidar (Karnataka), and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. While most Sikhs are concentrated in Punjab, Dakhni Sikhs are descendants of Sikh soldiers and disciples who accompanied Guru Gobind Singh to the Deccan in the early 1700s. Many stayed behind after his passing, forming settled communities. Living in the culturally diverse Deccan for centuries, Dakhni Sikhs incorporated local languages (like Dakhni Urdu, Marathi, Telugu) and customs into their daily life, making them culturally distinct from Punjabi Sikhs. Unlike most Sikhs who speak Punjabi, Dakhni Sikhs often speak Dakhni (a dialect of Urdu), Marathi, or regional South Indian languages, though they still read Gurmukhi and follow Sikh scripture. Their religious identity remains firmly Sikh, with devotion to the Guru Granth Sahib and core Sikh principles. However, some practices may reflect local traditions or the Hazuri Sikh influence (from Hazur Sahib), which is more traditional and warrior-like in orientation.
