First harvest of mulberry 🫐.
1. Choosing the Right Container:
Use a large container with a minimum size of 18-24 inches in depth and width. Mulberries develop extensive root systems, so they need space to grow.
Ensure the pot has drainage holes at the bottom to avoid waterlogging.
3. Soil Preparation:
Use well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. You can mix garden soil, compost, and coco peat in a 1:1:1 ratio.
Mulberries prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0).
4. Planting:
If using a sapling, plant it in the center of the container and fill the sides with soil. Make sure the root ball is fully covered.
If planting from a cutting, insert it into the soil and water lightly.
5. Watering:
Water the plant thoroughly after planting, then water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
During hot summers in India, the plant may require more frequent watering.
6. Sunlight:
Place the container in an area that gets full sunlight for 6-8 hours a day. Mulberries thrive in bright, direct sunlight.
7. Fertilization:
Apply organic fertilizer or compost once every 2-3 months during the growing season (spring and summer).
Avoid over-fertilizing as it may lead to excessive leafy growth and fewer fruits.
8. Pruning:
Prune the mulberry tree in winter or early spring to maintain a manageable size and promote better fruiting.
Regular pruning also helps increase air circulation and sunlight penetration.
9. Pest and Disease Control:
Mulberry trees are relatively pest-resistant, but you may encounter common pests like aphids or spider mites.
Use organic solutions like neem oil.
Harvesting:
Harvest the berries when they turn dark purple or black and are soft to the touch.
