"My first instincts were to close the book on this album and call it 'complete' when my wife and I departed Los Angeles after more than thirty years, to drive across the country toward Maine on an early December morning. I liked the idea that its conjuring would be held within the frame of that particular time and place of our shared life. But somewhere in Nebraska late one evening, as I drove and Melanie slept, hoping to reach Lincoln before weariness might fully overtake me too, I began to hear this song surface within my conscious mind like a radio station – fractured by static, yet insistently tugging upon my imagination.

I’m not sure how I understood that it somehow concerned the iconic and tragic folksinger for whom this song is named and dedicated: I just knew -much like I knew I was writing about Richard Pryor so many years earlier; and I understood that it had a part to play within this new album’s pageant. And as such, once we’d finally arrived to The Pine Tree State, I set up a portable recording apparatus in the house we were initially renting in the small shipbuilding town of Bath, and laid claim to it. I was greedy; but I am not sorry.

This song features my dear friend, the great young artist Madison Cunningham on vocals and electric guitars. She also loves Karen Dalton, and does much to allow Karen’s spirit to haunt these proceedings. My gratitude to her is enduring." – Joe Henry on the song 'Karen Dalton'
