making an illustrated recipe + zine 🥟 what it's like being an asian american immigrant!

Let's make an illustrated recipe (and turn it into a mini zine)! Nearly every culture has a form of dumpling (gyoza! pierogies! ravioli! samosas!), so I thought I'd show you mine. I also talk a bit about being Chinese-Canadian and the unspoken requirements of assimilation, especially for a new immigrant, and trying to unlearn those ideas and trying to be more proud of my cultural identity.

Some things I forgot to mention in the voice-over:

My experience as an AA immigrant is only my own, and is not meant to be seen as a universal experience. I gloss over a lot of the hard parts of being an immigrant because this is just supposed to be a casual video, but even things like wearing red & gold together used to be very hard for me because I thought it made me seem too "aggressively" Chinese, and I didn't want to exoticize myself more than my face already did. Hopefully some of my stories and my words might be something that seems familiar to you, or that you can empathize with my experiences, but please don't assume that every Asian American person has lived the same life as I have (because they haven't, obviously!)

You can substitute ground chicken instead of pork in the recipe, which I've done before for a friend's dietary reasons! They still turned out really tasty.
