Large Roll Unwind Automatic Splice Sequence

At New Era, we build a lot of custom unwind systems for virtually all market segments. The turret unwind in this video, which was designed for fully automatic splicing of large (80" diameter) rolls of paper at high speeds, incorporated many unique features to both handle the size of the jumbo rolls as well as integrate with the end users roll handling needs. Despite the large diameters, the roll weights were quite low, which enabled us to design the turret unwind with cantilevered spindles. The cantilevered spindles make loading and unloading of material from the turret unwind considerably easier for the end user. Additionally, the floor space required for the turret unwind is reduced by having minimal hardware on the operator side of the machinery. The automatic splicing application was quite challenging in that the material is quite delicate, the incoming jumbos are wound loosely and the material is very soft. Despite these challenges, we have demonstrated the functionality of the unwind through the full range of operating conditions during the FAT at our facility.
