15" Double-Top Archtop – Carbon Fiber Meets Traditional Tonewoods
Over the past months, I’ve been developing something new in my workshop — a 15-inch archtop guitar that blends my established carbon-fiber construction with a double-top system made from traditional tonewood veneers.
This instrument features a carbon fiber neck and carbon fiber sides, with the exterior of the sides wrapped in a beautifully figured flamed maple veneer. But the real innovation is inside the top and back.
Inspired by Matthias Dammann’s pioneering 1989 double-top classical guitars and the laminated archtop methods used by Steve Andersen, I built the top and back using:
-Spruce and flamed maple veneers
-A Nomex® honeycomb core for strength and ultra-low mass
-A protective ultra-thin fiberglass sealing layer, using less than 10 grams of epoxy per plate
This sealing layer doesn’t color or restrict the sound — it simply stabilizes the laminate against humidity changes and ensures long-term reliability.
The result surprised even me:
A loud, resonant instrument with the clarity and projection , with a sound I could only describe as “airy". Guitar has an open character that comes from the tonewood-Nomex sandwich.
This build represents an additional offering in my work — a fusion of composite materials with the acoustic character of traditional tonewoods, using a method that blends the best of both worlds. I’ll be offering this laminated double-top option for future custom commissions.
