American Coot

The American Coot is a familiar and charismatic wetland bird across much of North America, easily recognized by its dark body, bright white bill, and surprisingly large, lobed feet. Though often mistaken for a duck, the coot belongs to the rail family, making it more closely related to species like gallinules and even cranes than to mallards. Its adaptability allows it to thrive in ponds, marshes, reservoirs, and even city park lakes—places where its energetic behavior and constant vocalizations make it hard to miss.

American Coots are strong swimmers and divers, using their unusual lobed toes to propel themselves through the water with surprising speed. These same toes fold back with each step, enabling them to walk efficiently on land or across floating vegetation. Their diet consists largely of aquatic plants, but they also consume small invertebrates and occasionally steal food from ducks. Social by nature, coots often gather in large flocks, especially in winter, forming “rafts” that can number in the hundreds.

During the breeding season, coots build floating nests anchored to emergent vegetation. They are fiercely territorial, engaging in dramatic chases and foot-slapping fights to defend their space. Despite their sometimes comical appearance, they are tough, resilient birds with a wide range across the continent. Their presence in a wetland is a sign of a productive ecosystem, and their bold behavior makes them a favorite among birdwatchers.
