1971 की जंग के बाद इंदिरा गांधी को “दुर्गा” कहे जाने की चर्चित बात को अटल बिहारी बाजपेयी ने खुद खारिज किया था. उन्होंने कहा कि बांग्लादेश युद्ध में उन्होंने इंदिरा गांधी की भूमिका की प्रशंसा जरूर की थी, क्योंकि वह इसकी हकदार थीं. लेकिन दुर्गा की उपमा देने से इनकार करते हुए अटल जी ने कहा था कि देवी दुर्गा दैत्यों का संहार करती हैं, अपनों को जेल में नहीं डालतीं.
