Dr. Joseph Guillory is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center. His clinical interests include health disparities and equity, health care systems and operations, and transitional-age youth and young adult (TAY) psychiatry. Determined to improve the circumstances of underserved communities, he pursued higher education and advocacy opportunities at Baylor University and then McGovern Medical School in Houston. While at McGovern, he decided to devote his professional career to serving individuals who live with mental health conditions and their families through the field of psychiatry. During his adult psychiatry residency at UTSW he began seeking out opportunities that allowed him to serve others beyond the clinic. Through his volunteer work, he was able to better understand and support individuals with mental health conditions. Inspired by these experiences, his professional interests are aimed at addressing health disparities and social injustice within the field of mental health.

Dante is outgoing with friends, confident in school, and a strong member of his football team; no one would suspect that he feels utterly depressed and trapped by the expectations of his family and peers. As he struggles to overcome the feelings of hopelessness that have characterized his teen years, Dante will find unexpected allies in his football coach and the coach’s son, a mental health mentor.
