DIY Kitchen Island from a Vintage Dresser / A Budget Farmhouse Furniture Makeover

Hello friends! ... Now that Christmas baking is behind us I wanted to bring you along as I clean and organize my Baking Center/DIY Kitchen Island that I created from an old dresser. This isn't just any ordinary dresser ... it is a dresser with a history ... Watch this video for inspiration in how I created a kitchen island for only a few $$

Creating a kitchen island from an old dresser is a popular and practical DIY project that can add character and function to your space. The process usually involves modifying the dresser's structure, adding a durable countertop, and finishing it to match your kitchen's decor.

My project was very simple and straight forward ... This dresser was almost countertop height so no need to raise it ... But you will need to measure yours before starting ... 36" is usually a comfortable height ... You may need to add legs or casters to yours to reach a comfortable height.

Prepare the Dresser:
Strip or Sand: "I only needed to sand the two sides ... and then painted those two sides and the new beadboard on back."

Modify Structure: You can remove some drawers to create open shelving or a cubby for appliances or baskets. "I chose to keep and use all 3 of the existing drawers ...You may need to reinforce the bottom or back with plywood or boards to add stability or support new features like wheels. "I removed the original back on mine and replaced it with a piece of beadboard."

Add a countertop if needed. A butcher block is a popular choice for it's authentic kitchen feel and durability, which you can then seal ... with polyurethane or oil ... to make it water-resistant. "I chose to use two large marble pastry boards on the top of mine since I would be using it primarily for kneeding bread, making pie crusts and rolling out cookie dough". Less expensive than an install and I could do it myself.

Final Touches:
Add features: Install hooks on the side for towels or small shelves for extra storage.

-New Hardware ... "I chose to keep the original wooden handles/pulls and just painted them black"
-Basic Tools: Circular saw, screwdriver, nails, hammer
