In the beautiful lands of northern British Columbia on Prince Rupert Island, Delvin and Grace Solkinson film Rainbow End Farm which grows food for the local Food Bank as well as a small Community Supported Agriculture scheme.
What is unique about this demonstration farm, with composting systems, greenhouses and many productive raised beds with different microclimates, is that it is a classroom for students at the Coast Mountain College who are exploring the edge of education for a year as part of their certified course. This includes a full two-week Permaculture Design Course taught by Delvin and Grace with Ken Shaw.
Ken is a retired college professor who co-founded the Applied Coastal Ecology Programme and included the Permaculture Design Certificate as part of the Sustainable Communities Programme at Coast Mountain College. He currently runs Rainbow End Farm in Prince Rupert and donates half the production to the local food bank. He is deeply involved in food security work and is the author of the Food Policy section of the City of Prince Rupert’s 2030 Sustainable City Plan.
At Coast Mountain College students study, work and play in one of the most spectacular places on earth. Their classroom is connected to place – to rich cultures, rugged landscapes and breathtaking vistas. This is education unbound.
