Although Minecraft for PS1 has become a very popular concept, the PS1 actually was too old and too underpowered to run the game. After all, Minecraft's first versions released near the end of its existence, and is a sandbox game where every bit of it is interactive. It took till the PS2 to port the game, and even then only versions before infinite worlds.
Here we see a player playing beta 1.7 on the PS2. It's one of few games to rely on internet functionality to get new updates, as well as the keyboard and mouse controller.
The player is partaking in the 404 Challenge, a popular challenge in the beta days. The seed 404 has a gravel patch at the center of the world, which when dug reveals a massive cave network. Players would have the entire first day to collect resources, then dive into the cave and never return to the surface. As you can see, this task can be quite difficult, especially as beta 1.7 lacked a hunger bar and health regeneration.
Minecraft for PS2 ended with indev, and it would take till the PS3 for infinite worlds and more modern features to finally come to the Playstation ecosystem. But PS2 Minecraft remains a fascinating part of its legacy and history.
