“Drinking Water” (“Água de Beber”) was written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes in 1961, during the early years of the bossa nova movement. The song emerged from the same creative period that produced “Desafinado,” “Corcovado,” and “The Girl from Ipanema,” helping to define the harmonic and rhythmic vocabulary that became central to Brazilian modern popular music.
The original Portuguese lyric draws on imagery of drought, renewal, and the movement of water, themes found throughout Vinicius de Moraes’s poetry. Jobim later created an English version with lyricist Norman Gimbel, which helped introduce the piece to American audiences in the mid-1960s.
“Drinking Water” became part of the core bossa nova repertoire and has been recorded by artists including Astrud Gilberto, Frank Sinatra & Jobim, Elis Regina, Stan Getz, and Sérgio Mendes, each contributing to its international profile.
This performance follows the English lyric and retains the characteristic rhythmic approach that identifies the song as a classic of the bossa nova era.
