I visit Melton Mowbray Tuesday Livestock and Farmers Market and buy a Dickinson & Morris Pork Pie.
The Leicestershire town of Melton Mowbray is well known for its weekly livestock and Agricultural markets which also includes a farmers market. The town was once at the absolute centre of fox hunting, and the surrounding Leicestershire country side was widely regarded as the finest riding and hunting country in Britain. It's said that Melton Mowbray made pork pies were taken in to the fields and coverts by hunters and staff and to this day the Melton Pork Pie is widely popular and just as easy to slip into one's pocket as it ever was. Dickinson and Morris are famous pie makers and have a ship in the town centre. The phrase 'paint the town red' arose in Metlon following some rabble-rousing in the town many years ago. The market attract hundreds of people from all walks of life and is a fantastic meeting place for farmers and growers, buyers and sellers. Cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, cage birds and game in season are auctioned every Tuesday morning in the various halls. Entry is free so put on your country clothes and pay a visit to Melton Market.
