Experience the wonder of infants' minds as they navigate their environment, imitate facial expressions, and engage with their caregivers. Witness the incredible capabilities of newborns, their ability to recognize familiar faces, and their preference for novel stimuli. Through advanced technology like eye-tracking and EEG, researchers unlock the mysteries of infants' cognitive processes, providing invaluable insights into their developing minds.
Attitudes about children have changed over time/culture:
• Medieval (to 15th century)- children seen as vulnerable beings
• Reformation (16th Century)- children are born evil, stubborn, must be civilised • Modern developmental Psychology resulted from industrialisation; 7 year old children working in coal mines/factories in 1800s. Formed concern for safety and wellbeing
• Society for Research in Child development established in 1933
• Where does knowledge come from; Plato-innate knowledge, careful upbringing with discipline (knowledge is already there). Aristotle- all knowledge comes from experience. Locke (1690s)-tabula rasa (parents can mould child any way they want). Rousseau (1760s)-noble savage (innocent child corrupted by society).
• Beginnings of studies of children; Darwin (1870s)- baby biographies, intense everyday observation of individual children. Hall (1890s)-large scale norming studies (questionnaires etc.). Watson (1920s)- behaviourist approaches. Piaget, Vygotsky- experimental.
• What changes in a child (differences in mechanisms); Hall and Gesell (1890s)-genetics, development unfolding automatically. Freud and Erikson (1990s)-resolution of conflict between biological drives and social expectations. Watson (1920s)-learning (punishments and rewards). Piaget (1930)-cognitive stages. Vygotsky (1930)- zone of proximal development.
