Catullus is one of the Ancient World’s most famous poets - his passionate love poems, tragic elegies in remembrance of his dead brother, risky send ups of politicians and stinging attacks on his rivals are as fresh today as when they were written more than 2000 years ago.
He captured the full range of human emotions in a way that had not really been attempted before and had a profound impact on all subsequent poets.
He is most famous for his racy love poems, but his 116 surviving carmina or songs, some just a couple of lines long, with others extending to over 400 lines bring to life the richness, complexity and raunchiness of Ancient Rome like nothing else.
Finding Out More
If you want to find out more about Catullus, look no further than the poems themselves. I would recommend modern translations to get a flavour of just how different his voice was to the poets who had come before. I have listed some of these on my Amazon Store Page. https://www.amazon.com/shop/professor...
