Jane's USNF'97 • Kuril Islands Campaign Mission 23: Helo Pad

Russian helicopters has been a thorn in the side of friendly forces operating on Urup recently. Intelligence pinpointed the location of their base and we're tasked with splashing those helos.

There is also a flight of Flankers in the area, but the F-14s should be able to take them out.

Since attacking Ace (3 dots on target view) pilots flying Hokums with missiles is rather futile (they often are able to spoof your missiles), I opted for mowing them down with the led from the Equalizer. Much more efficient. I could basically go naked into this mission, but if I did so, my wingman also would be Winchester (he mirrors your loadout), so I hung 2 AIM-120s and 2 AIM-9s just for him to use initially to help the Tomcats dealing with the Flankers. I brought my missiles back, as in this campaign every missile counts.

Those 4 Hokums that take off mid mission are all Rookie, so gunning them down is like shooting ducks in a row (literally). For more experience pilots it's best to use altitude advantage, as they usually will not pull up to engage you, though one tried that and landed few hits on my fuselage. So use the "high-ground" tactic ;)
