Salmon trolling in Åland (#Ahvenanmaa in Finnish) spring #2023. Big salmon bites after four days of fishing and the fishermen feel happy again.
Salmon trolling refers to a popular type of fishing where anglers use a boat to slowly draw one or more fishing lines with lures through the water to catch salmon. Åland is an archipelago situated between #Finland and Sweden and is well-known for its rich marine life, making it an ideal spot for fishing enthusiasts.
When #trolling for #salmon in Åland, the following tips can help you:
The best time for salmon trolling in Åland typically runs from late April through August, when the salmon are active and feeding in the region’s water. Our fishing trip was first week of June but better could be one week later on this season.
High-quality trolling gear is necessary due to the size and strength of Baltic salmon. This includes sturdy rods, strong reels with good drag systems, and heavy-duty lines.
We used 0.46mm thick lines, 2.1 meter long rods.
The choice of lures can vary, but often included is a selection of spoons, plugs, or hoochies. The colors and patterns that mimic local prey fish are often the most effective.
Salmon can be found at varying depths depending on the temperature and time of day, so it's crucial to adjust the depth of your lures accordingly. We used weights of 5-200 grams to cover depths of 0-10 meter and our trolling speed was about 3.7km/h
The speed of trolling should be adjusted based on the activity level of the fish and the type of lure you are using — typically somewhere between 2.5km/ to 6km/h.
Always check for local fishing regulations before you start, as you may need a permit, and there might be restrictions on fishing methods and catch limits.
Hiring a local guide or talking to experienced local fishers can greatly improve your chances of success as they can offer insights on current conditions and proven fishing spots.
Remember that weather conditions can change rapidly on the water, so it’s important to always prioritize safety and to be prepared with the appropriate gear and knowledge of local weather patterns. Happy fishing!
