loading . . . is an art film based around the concept of "loading screens" or wait times. The idea of a loading screen is historically and culturally associated with video games. In the modern age a loading screen or boot up screen is commonplace on just about every piece of technology. They are one of the most recognisable and culturally significant pieces of the technological revolution.

Loading screens can take many different forms but generally most of them are deceptive and made with the express purpose of lying. Many will try to hide the fact that they're loading anything by giving a piece of visual candy to focus on and distract. Others show a progress bar, yet said progress bar is not accurate and is designed to be aesthetically pleasing and smooth for a viewer. Sometimes you are given a little game to play before the main game. This is to make you forget that you are waiting for something.

We like to wait, however. We like loading screens. They are familiar. They are a digital version of a queue. Humans like queues. We like to hate them.
