Distal Pancreatectomy with Islet Auto-Transplant

In cases where pancreatectomy may result in a remnant pancrease that is too small to adequately supply insulin post-operatively, an islet auto-transplant procedure can be done. Following removal, the pancreas is dissected on a backbench and taken to the cell lab for pancreatic islet cell processing. Purified islet cells are collected in an infusion bag, and infused through a portal vein catheter to take up residence in the liver. Post-operatively the islets establish vascular connections in the liver sinusoid, and will start to produce and release insulin.
