Il-Gostra is a traditional game played in Malta during village feasts in seaside towns. The game dates back to the Middle Ages and uses a 10 to 16-metre long wooden pole covered in animal fat or grease as its main prop. The aim of the game is to grab one of the three flags at the end of the pole: a blue and white one dedicated to St. Mary, a yellow and white one representing the Vatican and the Belgian tricolour dedicated to St. Julian (who is believed to be born in Ath, a Belgian town, in 7AD)
