One Minute Bunkai: Naihanchi Shodan #1

One Minute Bunkai: Naihanchi Kata does not win you a trophy at tournaments, but where it really counts (in the street) it wins you an even better prize, your life. The opening move with the open hand and elbow has to be worked a little more than how it is done in the kata. The hand goes out, but the Kata does not dictate exactly how to use it, it is showing you a principle, an "idea". Here in this bunkai I show you 2 open hand moves, an arm-bar, a head manipulation then finally you get to the elbow of the kata. Get the idea? The signature move of the kata has to fit in naturally, you cannot force it, sometimes it can work exactly like the kata but most times you have to add a little "reality" before it can be used. Often this means you will be working an idea with a partner, or in your head and then "WOW" here you are all of a sudden doing the Naihanchi elbow. It has to flow like a Jazz artist, cannot be forced, you must allow yourself to be a vehicle for Karate and let it flow thru. Open your mind and get in touch with that creative center where all this stuff flows from.
