During the Gallic Wars, without putting up a fight, whole cities immediately sided with Rome and even took advantage of the generosity of the emperors, from Julius Caesar to Constantine the Great.
Located at the junction of the main roads and sea routes, Arles, in the south of France, did tremendously well. The city was extremely wealthy and the most beautiful Roman monuments were built there. Its amphitheatre, 21 metres high, with 60 arcades, is a replica of the Colosseum in Rome. Its circus, which is 450 metres long and was built entirely from stone, was one of the three most renowned in all of Roman Gaul. As well as these two monumental structures, the city had a forum, ramparts, and a theatre built in the early days of the Empire. Hence, Arles was nicknamed "the little Rome of Ancient Gaul".
The monuments of Arles are listed as World Heritage Sites and the town's Roman past is visible throughout. Thanks to architectural research, today, the city's old stones can tell us with greater precision and finesse the story of this prodigious city and its inhabitants during the Roman era.
Who brought about the expansion of Arles? What was the relationship between its inhabitants and the Roman Emperors? Which monuments did they commission? Here, for the first time, is the architectural odyssey of the most elegant Gallo-Roman city in History.
