Trump NATO claims - Should the Prime Minister stand up for troops? | Good Morning Britain

Expectation is growing that the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, is on the brink of a Westminster comeback and a possible leadership challenge against Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

The pathway opened after MP Andrew Gwynne announced he was standing down from his safe seat because of ill health - triggering a by-election.

Donald Trump has provoked outrage after claiming Nato troops "stayed a little back" from the front line in Afghanistan.

The US president made the comments in an interview with Fox News, in which he reiterated his suggestion that Nato would not support America if asked.

He said: “We’ve never needed them.

“They’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan … and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.”

The UK, along with other allies, fought in Afghanistan after the US invoked the collective security provisions of Nato's article 5, following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
