Rhône Glacier Expedition – Exploring the Source of the Rhône River | Furka Pass, Switzerland

Join us on an alpine journey to the Rhône Glacier (Rhonegletscher) — the largest glacier of the Urner Alps and the source of the Rhône River, which later flows into Lake Geneva.

Located high above the small mountain village Gletsch, the glacier once reached all the way down to the valley. Today, it’s easily accessible from the scenic Furka Pass Road, near the iconic Hotel Belvedere — a true Swiss landmark. Just beside it lies the Eisgrotte, a man-made ice cave that must be recarved every year as the glacier retreats.

During our exploration on the glacier, we stumbled upon relics from the past — old ammunition and tins, slowly resurfacing as the ice melts. Walking across the glacier’s surface feels like stepping into a frozen time capsule, surrounded by stunning alpine scenery and a sense of nature’s fragile power.
