This is an oscilloscope deconstruction of Title from Mega Man X.
Composer: Setsuo Yamamoto
Notes:
The title theme.
Unlike the Battle Network intro themes, this doesn't loop. But unlike the Zero intro themes, it's beefy at about 26 seconds long.
SNES music has some notable limitations compared to GBA or NDS music. The SNES has 8 sound channels. That's it. Each one can only play one note at a time. All of the channels play PCM samples. No square or triangle waves here.
To create a rich sound, composers often double or triple up the channels to add reverb or harmony to the main melody. You can see that with channels 3 and 4, as well as 1, 2, and 8.
One interesting thing about channels 3 and 4 is that 4, the melody, is panned all the way to the left, while channel 3, the harmony, is panned to the right. This means you can basically deconstruct these two channels just by using your headphones. Only by listening to both sides at once do you hear the complete composition.
Tools used:
Game Emu Player -- used to rip SNES sound channels
Corrscope -- used to generate oscilloscope visualizations
