INTENSE FINISH! Mrunal Sarode Shines in Men’s 5000m | Indian Open Athletics 2025 Pune"
🏁 Race Overview
The Men’s 5000m event at the Indian Open Athletics Meet 2025 turned out to be one of the most thrilling long-distance races of the year, held under hot and humid Pune conditions on July 12.
Right from the gun, it was a tightly packed lead group consisting of multiple Army runners and Maharashtra’s local talent, Mrunal Sarode, who had the home crowd behind him. The pace was honest, hovering close to 2:50 per kilometer.
By the 3K mark, it was clear this race would come down to a final sprint. Mrunal Sarode, showing maturity beyond his years, sat behind the Army wall — Dharmender, Harmanjot, Onkar, Sunil, and Lovepreet — who tried to dictate the rhythm.
But in the last 600 meters, Sarode launched a perfectly timed surge that split the lead pack. In the final straight, he kicked past Dharmender and Harmanjot with a blistering finish to win the race in 14:11.71, just a few seconds outside the national record of 13:11.82 by Gulveer Singh.
