Script for parents and families looking to encourage their school board / district to adopt evidence-based approaches into literacy instruction:

Dear [name of school board / person in charge of literacy at school board],

I am writing to express my concerns with the approved literacy program being used in the early years and primary grades in this school board / district. The current program is based on whole language which does not give students the foundational information they need in order to accurately decode and read texts. Although I understand the value in rich comprehension, research shows that without beginning reading instruction with a systematic phonics-based program, many students will miss out on the skills they need to be able to comprehend text in rich ways later on. Furthermore, there is a cumulative effect to reading practice and so failing to provide adequate reading instruction will continue to widen the gap in literacy, knowledge transmitted through the literary tradition, and social equity as a whole. Many school boards and districts have shifted their approach to literacy and have adopted programs that use systematic phonics instruction in response to the overwhelming research that supports this practice. I have shared this information with other concerned parents who will also be following up with you. Please let me know how we may move forward in bringing research-based and evidence-based literacy practice to this school board / district. I would appreciate a timely response.
