Lesvos: More Than Just Another Greek Island!

The charming Lesvos, the third largest island of the country, with its many waters, its rich flora and fauna, its famous olive groves, its sweet Mediterranean climate, its thermal springs, its unique petrified forest , its museums, its charming traditional settlements and the amazing samples of industrial architecture (olive mills, soap making, tannery) from the industrial development of the island in the 19th century, and its famous products such as ouzo and oil, impresses and leaves a special impression on every modern traveler.

At the same time, the contribution of Lesbos to the arts and letters was invaluable. Prominent figures of antiquity such as Sappho, Alcaeus, Arion, Terpandros, Theophrastus, Pittacus of Mytilene, but also of modern times such as Theophilos, Ilias Venezis, Stratis Myrivilis, Argyris Eftaliotis (Cleanthis) were born here Michaelidis), Georgios Iakovides and the artist Stratis Eleftheriadis (Teriade), while from Lesbos were the roots of the Nobel laureate poet Odysseus Elytis.

The name Lesvos was taken from the mythical hero Lesbos, who
arrived here together with Lapithes from Thessaly and married
the daughter of the settler Makara, Mithymna.

Mytilini
Capital of Lesbos and one of the oldest cities in Greece is Mytilini. It spreads over seven hills, while traditional folk houses, neoclassical mansions, Byzantine churches, refugee settlements and ancient monuments coexist harmoniously.
At the edge of the city, at the top of the pine tree, dominates the Byzantine castle, one of the largest in the Mediterranean. In addition to the walls, many underground arcades, a tank, the coats of arms of the Gateluzos and many Ottoman monuments have been preserved.
Visit Kioski, the old aristocratic neighborhood of the locals, at the foot of the castle hill, with magnificent neoclassical mansions. In the old northern port, known as Epano Skala, there are preserved Ottoman buildings (Yeni Mosque, Baths, etc.) and old refugee neighborhoods.
In the old market, on Ermou Street and the surrounding streets, the atmosphere is particularly picturesque.
The old town is dominated by the imposing church of Agios Therapontos (1850), the largest church on the island with its huge dome (40m high) built on the site of an ancient Asclepion.
In Mytilini you have the opportunity to visit many museums such as the Archaeological Museum, with mosaic floors and frescoes and the Byzantine - Ecclesiastical Museum which houses wood carvings, rare Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, sacred vessels, vestments and silversmithing works.
In the suburb of Varia (4 km. S), there are the Theophilos Museum (86 works of the great self-taught painter, 1873-1934 are on display) and the Strati Eleftheriadis - Teriade Museum - Library , rich in collection of books and paintings. The Museum exhibits, among others, works by Baudin, Bores, Chagall, Giacometti, Gromaire, Layrence, Le Corbusier, Leger, Matisse, Miro, Picasso, as well as Giorgos Vakirtzis, Theofilos Hatzimihalis, Kalligiannis Manolis, Kanellis Orestis, Marouda Kallirrois, Rorris Giorgos , Tsarouhis Giannis, Mrs..
Make a stop at the ancient theater, with a capacity of 15,000 seats (ruined today), whose acoustics are considered comparable to those of Epidaurus. Next to the theater, in the Chorafa district, the House of Menandros was discovered, with the exquisite mosaics that are kept in the archaeological museum.
In the southern part of the city, in the picturesque suburb of Makris Gialos(Makrygialou), above the Marine Club, the "Old Christian Martyrion" is preserved, a square building where Christians were buried, as well as facilities of an ancient Roman fish farm.
In Soufada and Akleidiou, one of the most beautiful suburbs of the city (2 km S) with magnificent mansions, you will see the church of Panagia and the Tower of Fotiadis.
On the verdant eastern slopes of Mount Amali, in the village of Taxiarches, is the wonderful homonymous church.
