🔋 Battery Drag Race! AAAA vs AAA vs AA (Simple Electric Train)
In this experiment, I created five versions of a Simple Electric Train (also known as a Magnet Train or Homopolar Motor Train) using three different types of Duracell batteries: AAAA, AAA, and AA. The goal? To find out which battery makes the fastest magnetic train!
To make things fair and more scientific, I also built five separate copper wire tracks, designed to match each battery size, and ran a drag race between the three trains. You might be surprised by the results!
🚄 What is a Simple Electric Train?
A Simple Electric Train is a fun and visual science experiment that uses:
A battery (AAAA, AAA, or AA)
Two neodymium magnets
A copper wire shaped into a coil or spiral track
When the magnets are attached to both ends of the battery and placed inside the copper wire track, electric current flows from the battery through the wire. This creates a magnetic field, which interacts with the neodymium magnets and generates motion — causing the train to move forward. It’s a simple demonstration of Lorentz force and electromagnetism in action!
🔧 How to Make a Simple Electric Train:
You’ll need:
1x Duracell battery (AAAA, AAA, or AA)
2x strong neodymium magnets (cylinder-shaped)
Bare copper wire (thick enough to hold its shape)
Patience and creativity 🙂
Steps:
Wrap the copper wire into a long coil (you can shape it like a tunnel or a spring).
Attach a neodymium magnet to each end of the battery.
Carefully place the battery-magnet unit into the copper coil.
Watch as the magnetic train starts moving through the coil!
⚠️ Safety Tip: Always be careful with neodymium magnets — they are extremely strong and can pinch fingers if handled carelessly. Never leave the train running unattended.
