We are really getting into the heavy hitters (and just plain heavy) amps for the start of 2026! This time we have an early 1970's Ampeg V4 on the bench that came in after getting REALLY hot and acting weird at a band practice. Follow along as we find a burnt PCB, original filter caps, and discuss the pros and cons of ordering a capacitor kit versus sourcing your own parts. We will also dive into the age old question of: is it okay to run 6550s in an Ampeg V4??
This is just a diagnosis, but we will back soon to repair not only this Ampeg V4, but also two more from my personal collection.
