Jane Lewis, a professional genealogist working at Surrey History Centre talks about these fascinating notebooks.
The Reverend Wallis Hay Laverty was rector of Headley, between 1872 and 1928. While he may not have had a vocation for the church, Laverty’s conscience ensured that he performed his ministerial duties meticulously. During the period of his ministry Laverty kept detailed notebooks and recorded information about all the residents in the village – some of it not all terribly flattering! He saved newspaper cuttings, letters and snippets of local history. He copied letters he had written and provided detailed genealogical notes for many of the families in the parish. He also drew up complex family trees and was obviously fascinated by the history of the village and surrounding area. The note books (along with all the Headley parish registers) are deposited at the Surrey History Centre.
