Southern serves the South was their motto, and yes they did. It was a well run money making machine, that also was aware of its heritage, and celebrated it with legions of railfans who loved it. its desire to run high hood diesel power, and its stylized black paint scheme fit in very well with future merger partner Norfolk and Western. Unlike many mergers, these two well run railroads meshed together seamlessly, and became the Eastern juggernaut that Norfolk Southern is today. Unfortunately, there is Armour yellow in its future as, as the Union Pacific behemoth is about to add NS to its fallen flag collection.
