*Operation Crossroads* was a series of two atomic bomb tests conducted by the United States at *Bikini Atoll* in July 1946. The purpose was to study the effects of nuclear explosions on warships, with a fleet of *nearly 100 decommissioned ships* positioned as targets. The tests marked the first nuclear detonations after Hiroshima and Nagasaki and were a major milestone in Cold War-era nuclear experimentation.

*The Two Tests: Able & Baker*
*Test Able* (July 1, 1946): An *airburst explosion* at 158 meters (520 ft) above the fleet, using a *23-kiloton* bomb. The *USS Nevada* was the designated target but survived. Several ships, including *USS Gilliam* and **USS Carlisle**, sank almost immediately.
*Test Baker* (July 25, 1946): A *subsurface detonation* at a depth of 27 meters (90 ft), which created a massive radioactive water column. This test proved far more devastating, sinking multiple ships, including *USS Saratoga (CV-3)* and *IJN Nagato* within days. The water contamination also rendered Bikini Atoll unsafe.

*The Wrecks*
Bikini Atoll is now a **UNESCO World Heritage Site**, and its wrecks remain largely intact, making it one of the most famous dive locations in the world. The most notable wrecks include:
*USS Saratoga (CV-3)* – A massive aircraft carrier lying upright at ~50 meters (165 ft), with flight deck structures still visible.
*IJN Nagato* – Capsized and resting upside down at ~33–50 meters (108–165 ft), with its massive propellers still prominent.
*USS Arkansas (BB-33)* – A heavily damaged battleship, largely flattened by the blast, lying at ~55 meters (180 ft).
*USS Apogon (SS-308)* – A Balao-class submarine, well-preserved at ~55 meters (180 ft).
*USS Lamson (DD-367)* – A destroyer resting at ~51 meters (167 ft), heavily impacted by the blast.

*Bikini Atoll Today*
Although radiation levels have decreased over time, *Bikini Atoll remains uninhabited* due to lingering contamination in the soil and groundwater. A few caretakers and researchers monitor the area, but full resettlement remains unsafe. However, **diving is allowed**, and technical divers from around the world visit Bikini’s wrecks.
