Continental C85 Starter Installation

LaRosa is simply getting soft in his old age! He's owned this Piper J3 Cub for 20 years and says he's just tired of propping it, what a panz.... "If you miss the initial start, it's simply going to wear you out..." "I've always been interested in putting a starter on it, but knowing I had to cut a shaft off the back of the engine always gave me pause.."

LaRosa says, cutting the starter shaft off wasn't really that big of a deal. Pretty scary, but actually easy to do. Some things to keep in mind:

1. For a starter installation on a Continental C85, it MUST be a C85-12.
2. It is not necessary to remove the accessory housing or break the engine down.
3. Make sure to take extra precautions to prevent metal shavings from entering the engine. LaRosa used two small cotton rags to initially fill the space around the gears, then cover that with modelers clay before cutting.
4. Vacuum the clayed area out after cutting the shaft off.
5. Flush the area with solvent.
6. Carefully remove the clay. Make sure it's all removed before starting to remove the rags.
7. Remove the rags.
8. Vacuum the gears and area around the removed shaft.
9. Flush the area with solvent again to wash any unseen particles down to the oil sump.
9. Pour motor oil over the gears.
10. Change the oil.
11. We used an electric Dremel tool just because of the small size and. the availability of 1" discs. We initially tried a cordless Dremel, it wasn't nearly stout enough to get it done.
12. LaRosa chose the B&C starter because of the excellent customer service. "I spoke to both companies that make starters for the Cub. B&C's knowledgeable staff and ability to answer my questions and provided tips on installation simply eclipsed their competitor."
