K40 Laser Engrave Ceramic Tiles Permanently with this Trick: The Norton White Tile Method

This method of engraving ceramic white tiles uses white spray paint to react with the laser and create a permanent greyscale etching on the tile that is incredibly durable and nearly impossible to scratch off.

The method was developed by a gentleman by the name of Nicky Norton who is continuing to develop and refine the process in addition to experimenting with new ways to get a high quality image onto various materials.

Settings I used for Engraving
Laser Engraver: k40
Speed: 80 mm/s
Image DPI - 300
K40 Whisperer DPI - 333
Scan Gap - .003 in
Dither managed by K40 Whisperer
Power - Approx. 5 mA

Paint Used - 2 Coats of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2x Ultra Cover Blossom White Satin
**Other paints will work, you will need to test that paints and the thickness of coats to figure out what combination works best for you. It is really easy to burn through the paint and end up scoring into the tile which will prevent you from achieving the dark tones in images. It is a balancing act between laser power, paint, and speed. Experiment, Experiment Experiment
