Drinking water for the Turku region is produced using artificially recharged groundwater, also known as the Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) method, where pre-treated river water is naturally filtered through soil layers and delivered to the region’s municipalities. The system is based on hydrogeological precision and advanced engineering solutions, producing world-class drinking water.
Wastewater from 14 municipalities is treated at the Kakolanmäki facility, known for its exceptional purification performance and energy efficiency. The plant generates district heating and cooling, while biogas and recycled nutrients are recovered from the sludge – a successful model of circular economy in practice.
