The 1850''s was period of enormous economic growth in South Australia. The population tripled in that decade.
1860 Railway extended Adelaide to Kapunda.
This involved double handling at the Adelaide Marshalling Yard alongside North Terrace Railway Station.
Dry Creek Railway Line was a broad gauge single track from Dry Creek Junction to the Port Dock Station Marshalling Yard built in 1868.
It brought goods to and from the copper mines and farms in the Mid-North of South Australia and avoided the Adelaide Railway Station.
In 1878 the line was extended to get Murray River freight using a rail head at Morgan.
At Dry Creek the broad-gauge line formed a Triangle - "Y" Junction. There were thus two routes for Trains get from North Terrace to Port Dock Station.
Interstate Main Lines have been converted to Standard Gauge.
