The Furka Pass is 2,429 metres high and connects the valley town of Gletsch/Oberwald in the west with the valley town of Realp/Hospental in the east. The entire pass crossing is about 23 km long, with about 10 km on the western ascent and about 13 km on the eastern ascent. Around 1866, the pass was upgraded to a road, which is now very easy to drive on and connects the Swiss cantons of Valais and Uri. The pass can also be ‘conquered’ by rail through a tunnel.
North of the western ascent is the Rhone Glacier, whose meltwater forms the source of the Rhone River.
The Furka Pass is normally closed to public traffic from October to May due to snowfall and ice.
The Furka Pass is also known from the 1964 James Bond film ‘Goldfinger’, in which the old Hotel Belvédère, which is no longer in operation today, can be seen in some scenes.
The western ascent of the pass road is located in the municipality of Obergoms in the Swiss canton of Valais.
