Police chiefs are warning Labour’s justice reforms could drive up crime and pile extra costs onto forces already struggling financially.
Senior officers say plans to reduce short prison sentences and release prisoners earlier could lead to more reoffending and leave “predatory criminals” on the streets. They claim the Home Office has estimated the extra policing bill has risen from £400m to £800m, and the head of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, Gavin Stephens, has suggested crime could rise by up to 6% in a year if the Sentencing Bill goes ahead.
Chiefs also warn the Probation Service is already under strain, and say no funding has been set aside to cover the extra workload.
