Why take oil samples?
The purpose of oil sampling is to monitor the oils condition and the condition of the equipment. This can help prevent unnecessary breakdowns. With the cost of synthetic oils today and the cost of down time it’s a relatively inexpensive preventative maintenance tool. Oil life can be affected by the surroundings, high dust load or chemicals in the air, high temperature operation; all can effect oil life. For every 18*F over 195*F oil life can be cut in half.
Proper oil sampling and reports can show you how the oil is holing up by looking at characteristics like viscosity and Total Acid Number (TAN). You can also see additive elements, wear metals, and possible contaminants in the oil. This can help determine the actual runable time of the oil in your specific conditions or show that a compressor issue is imminent and repairs will need to be scheduled. Oil left in equipment too long can cause oxidation and varnish. If not seen when new oil added or when oil is changed, it will quickly degrade the new oil, and could damage equipment leading to down time.
Oil sampling can help keep you informed and your compressor operating properly. When your compressed air equipment has issues you can count on Scales to take care of it!
