Emily Webster-Zuber: A Quiet Tomb, duo for flute and cello (2021)
About this work:
My piece, A Quiet Tomb, is based on a short poem called "I Wish I Had a Quiet Tomb" by Louisa May Alcott, a 19th century American author. I created a story around the wish of the character in the poem, so it begins before the wish at a cold and desolate tomb, absent of any sounds of life. Then the wish is made, and we are taken to a dream-like atmosphere of warmth, playfulness, and hope. As all dreams disappear, so does the wish, and we are gradually left in absolute silence. I wanted to play with the idea of the word "quiet" in these two atmospheres - quiet as the absence of sound, versus quiet as the presence of nature.
