2022 Tiffin Midas 24RT Owner Experience - Overview

My 2022 Tiffin 24RT story: (Purchased January 2023)

My wife and I have been searching for a motorhome for several months, looking for a couples coach in the Class C category because we wanted more room than a Class B and a bathroom with a dry shower.

The only available motor homes in our price range (which excluded the higher priced and difficult to find Leisure Travel Vans) that we really tried to like were the Thor Compass/Gemini 23TW (large slide murphy bed) and eventually the longer 24KB (twin). The Winnebago Ekko (twin) was considered because it had so many cool features, but with a wet bath, cannister toilet and without a slide (and more $) it was not for us.

We considered motorhomes on the Ford E-350/E450 (and Chevy Express 4500) chassis, but after driving a few we felt that even the smallest one was too big to comfortably drive. But they are significantly cheaper than the other options that we were considering.

We considered Mercedes Sprinter chassis, and several murphy bed models made our short list, but almost all of them (except for the Thor Quantum 24MB, and Forest River Forester/Sunseeker 2400/2401T) would not allow the refrigerator to be opened with the slide in or the murphy bed down (except for the Jayco Melbourne/Entegra Quest24R). The Winnebago View/Navion 24D and 24V (twin) made our shortlist (and we are big fans of Winnebago engineering and build quality). The Tiffin Wayfarer 24LW (twin) also made our short list, and after seeing one in person, we were impressed with its build quality. We were hesitant to aggressively pursue any of these models because of their slightly bigger size than Ford Transit based motor coaches, the cost of diesel, at least $650/year in maintenance costs (labor intensive diesel fuel filter replacement and 13 qts of oil and filter annually, etc.), typically no TPMS and in late 2022 there was a Mercedes recall (parking brake software issue) that prevented the sale of Sprinters by dealers.

But then we found the Tiffin Midas 24RT. It seemed to first come out at the 2022 Tampa RV show, and it appears that there are few variations going around as we surveyed inventory around the country. Some of the variables between these models besides exterior colors include the option to have auto leveling, rear-side (vertical) compartment doors, second row bench seat variations, fore/aft tables, and a few don't have adaptive cruise. (It almost seems that Tiffin manufactured a range of model features as concepts or prototypes to test the public's attitudes at RV shows and at dealers. Or maybe it was a supply chain issue).

Similar to the Thor Compass/Gemini 24KB, the Midas does have a 178” wheelbase, aluminum wheels, outside shower, AWD, Ford safety technology, TPMS, no spare tire, large exterior storage and high CCC (1440 lbs), frameless awning and 2 TVs.

Compared to the Thor Compass/Gemini 24KB, the Midas does NOT have a slide (more living room space), a 12v compressor refrigerator, ducted AC, a jack-knife sofa (although small), a skylight, the latest Ford Transit chassis, a slightly larger propane tank, a bedroom door or curtain, gas stove (but only induction requiring generator or shore power) and more cabinets (including a wardrobe) to name a few.

But what the Midas does have over its competitors is a usable (somewhat) shower (21”x31.5”) with shower door, auto-leveling, soft start AC, an extended range 31 gallon gasoline tank, a large rear garage door, fiberglass roof, longer beds (76” rather than 73”), microwave up, 3 Fan-Tastic fans, cargo bay lights, padded interior ceiling, 6” less overall height (78" vs 80" interior height), pocket door to bathroom, an accessible generator and one not underneath behind the rear axle under the beds, a 2000w invertor to operate TVs and charge phones without using the generator or shore power, and insulated aluminum horizontally opening cargo slam latch doors, to name a few. (These are the features found in mine which may be different from another Midas).

Of course, my Tiffin Midas has not been without its problems after a few days and a few hundred miles. I will share what those problems are in a few weeks after they have been addressed.
