In 2019, Haneefah Khaaliq, a former schoolteacher made history when she announced plans to run for the U.S. Senate in Indiana. She toured over 60 Indiana counties and held 30 town halls on a public platform for education, human rights, and poverty.
Despite her efforts, on Friday, February 18, 2022, the Indiana Election Commission voted to remove Khaaliq from Indiana's primary ballot. While originally agreeing with the IEC's decision, Khaaliq's view quickly changed after she realized Indiana's archaic signature collection system was deeply flawed and was being used as a weapon to eliminate candidates.
Ms. Khaaliq suspected foul play and conducted a private investigation. In this video, Khaaliq reveals shocking truths about Indiana's outdated ballot access laws and her reasons for finishing the race as a write-in candidate. In the end, Indiana's courts refused to hear her case.
Despite hopes, Khaaliq chose not to run again in 2024 and instead supported the first African American in Indiana to receive a major party nomination for the U.S. Senate, Dr. Valerie McCray. Both McCray and Khaaliq were unfairly removed from the ballot in 2022.
