Installation of a Pioneer AVH-4200 NEX head unit in my 2017 WRX Limited. I cover the things that ended up taking me the most time. This video is meant as a reference. It is a long video so I will link to every section below. Even if you end up getting a pre-made harnesses this video can tell you what the harnesses are doing. Every installation will be different so use this as a guide. I also go over in detail how I figured out certain problems in the install so there are some good car audio tips sprinkled throughout. This video could have easily been two hours long so I didn’t include things I thought were common sense.

INFO ABOUT CAMERA: The only thing supplying power to the stock camera is the 12v to 6V step-down converter which is connected to the reverse wire. This means the camera will ONLY turn on when the car is in reverse. I did it like this on purpose for 2 reasons: 1) I don’t have a need to manually turn on the camera, and 2) I don’t think that converter is really designed to be always on. In my brief tests it got warm after a bit of use. I don’t want it to burn up on me in the future so I simply connected it to the reverse wire so it only turns on briefly while the car is in reverse as designed. If you need the ability to turn the camera on manually (when the car is not in reverse) instead of going to that reverse wire you need to plug in to a source that provides a constant 12V like the accessory wire or REM OUT on the HU.
INFO ABOUT MICROBYPASS: This device simulates the actions that you must take in order for the Pioneer to know you are parked and not driving (it is more than simply being in park). Some of you might wonder why not just connect that parking wire to a constant 12V source so that the unit always thinks the car is in park but that will not work as the Pioneer requires a sequence of events (pulses) which the microbypass simulates.
