I was Christian for 70 years. Then my wife Helen died from cancer in 2019, and I completely fell apart.
For two years I was lost - angry at God, stopped going to church, just waiting to die so I could be with her again.
Then my neighbor Ahmed invited me to the mosque. That visit changed everything.
Christianity told me to believe and have faith. But after Helen died, belief wasn't enough. I was numb.
Islam asked me to ACT - five prayers a day gave me structure when I had none. The community gave me connection when I was isolated. The routine gave me purpose when every day felt empty.
I took my Shahada in October 2021 at 82 years old. My kids thought I'd lost my mind. But they see it helps me.
I'm not saying Christianity is wrong - it worked for 70 years. But Islam is what I needed after Helen. It gave me a framework to keep living when I had nothing left.
I'm 86 now. A white guy from Indiana praying toward Mecca five times a day. Never thought my life would look like this. But I'm okay. Finally.
