Overall Message:
Identifying your spiritual gift is a God-initiated process confirmed through internal witness, external evidence, and godly fruit. The purpose of these gifts is to serve the church, impact the world, and ultimately glorify God by drawing people closer to Him.
Key Points: How to Identify Your Spiritual Gift
Minister Maluka outlines six primary ways to recognize and confirm the spiritual gifts God has placed in you:
1. You Have a Holy Burden
Definition: A God-given concern, passion, or "frustration" that consistently weighs on your heart for a specific group of people or area of service.
Evidence: This burden will naturally lead you to prayer and, eventually, to action.
Biblical Example: Nehemiah. Upon hearing about the broken walls of Jerusalem, he was uniquely burdened to the point of weeping, fasting, and praying—which later led him to rebuild the walls (Nehemiah 1:3-4).
Key Insight: Your holy burden is a sign that God trusts you with a specific mission.
2. The Gift Begins to Show Consistently
Definition: The gift will manifest in your life naturally and consistently as you abide in Christ, even without a formal title or position.
Evidence: You may find yourself operating in a gifting (e.g., giving advice, showing mercy, teaching) and surprising yourself with the wisdom or ability you display, realizing "this can't be me, it must be God."
Biblical Example: David. Long before he was king, he was recognized as a "skillful player, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech" (1 Samuel 16:18). His gifts of leadership, music, and courage were evident while he was still a shepherd.
3. The Gift is Confirmed by Others
Definition: Mature believers and mentors in the body of Christ will often recognize and confirm the gift they see operating in you.
Purpose: This external confirmation helps combat self-doubt and disqualification. We are often quick to question why God would choose us, but He qualifies the called.
Biblical Example: Barnabas and Saul (Paul). The church in Antioch, through the Holy Spirit, recognized their calling and formally set them apart for the work (Acts 13:2-3).
Key Insight: It is vital to be part of a community of believers who can help identify and confirm your gifting.
4. The Burden Matches the Gift
Definition: You will naturally flourish and feel energized in areas where you are spiritually burdened. You will not thrive where you are not burdened.
Evidence: The specific ministry God has called you to will align perfectly with the passion He has placed in your heart.
Biblical Example: Moses. He had a pre-existing burden for the suffering Israelites (seen when he killed the Egyptian). God's call at the burning bush (Exodus 3:7-10) spoke directly to that existing burden, confirming his mission.
Key Insight: Your inner witness will resonate when you hear about a gift that aligns with your burden.
5. The Gift is Tested and Proven Over Time
Definition: Before a gift reaches full maturity, God allows it to go through seasons of testing and preparation.
Purpose: These tests are not just hardships; they are life experiences designed to purify your motives, strengthen your character, and prove your faithfulness with the gift.
Biblical Example: Joseph. His God-given dream (gift of revelation) led him through immense trials (being sold into slavery, imprisonment) that tested and refined him before he could step into his ultimate purpose.
Practical Application: Be faithful with your gift in small things. If you have a teaching gift, prepare lessons even if you're not preaching. If you have a gift of mercy, serve as an usher. Faithfulness in small areas prepares you for greater responsibility.
6. The Fruit Confirms the Gift
Definition: The ultimate authenticity of a spiritual gift is measured by the transformative, godly fruit it produces in the lives of others.
Core Principle: A genuine gift from God will always draw people closer to Him, increasing their godliness and desire for Christ. If a "gift" produces worldly desires or self-glorification, it is not from God.
Biblical Support:
Matthew 7:17: A good tree (a God-given gift) cannot bear bad fruit (worldly results).
1 Corinthians 9:2: Paul pointed to the converted Corinthians themselves as the "fruit" and proof of his authentic apostleship.
Key Exhortation: The goal of our gifts is not earthly prosperity but the "high calling" of heaven and Christ-likeness.
