Farkhondeh Ahmadzadeh, who trained with Iranian masters of the art of Persian manuscript illumination, continues to work in this tradition as well as teaching at London's King's School for Traditional Arts. Here Farkhondeh talks about her project to illuminate the Haft Paykar (The Seven Beauties), an allegorical Persian poem written by Niẓāmī Ganjavī in 1197. With Farkhondeh's gorgeous illuminations (now the subject of an exhibition at London's Aga Khan gallery) guiding us through the tale of a prince's search for spiritual enlightenment, we learn about the symbolism of colour, numbers and geometry, as well as learning about the practice of traditional illumination and calligraphy and the natural pigments Farkonheh makes and uses.
