How To Do Massive Drops! Beginner to Advanced Street Trials Techniques

Drops, a crowd pleaser, a right of passage for some and definitely a classic trials move! Big drops are easy to do but hard to land so today I take you through the steps needed to do them as safely as possible all the way from total beginner up to advanced.

This was harder to explain than I ever thought it would be! It's one of those things that I've been doing for over two decades now so it can be hard to really break down what I'm doing and explain in a way that makes sense. I really hope my explanations do make sense and help you but I'm sure I might have missed some points so don't be shy in sharing any tips you have picked up on your own personal journey.

As I mention in the video, drops are dangerous so please stay safe, pad up if you like and practice onto slightly soft ground (but not too soft, you still want to be able to roll away) if you feel it'll help.

Drops can be done on any bike but this trials style is best suited to hardtail, the suspension kick-back on a full suss can make the cranks want to rotate backwards when landing with a locked brake which makes a harsh landing even harsher. It's not impossible, just don't expect to automatically have smooth landings just because you have rear suspension. Front suspension is fine and can make it a softer landing for your wrists but if done right drops on a rigid bike like mine aren't particularly bad on the body if you build up, I've been riding for 24 years and done thousands of big drops and I am yet to get any joint issues, building up to the bigger drops is key to both get a smoother technique but also condition your body.

My bike setup is an Inspired Hex street trials bike which is completely rigid. I run 40 psi front and rear and use Light Bicycle carbon rims, I have Sram GX cranks and Inspired pedals, my bars are also Inspired models and I'm using Shigura brakes (MT7 rear,MT6 front with M810 Saint levers). Like I mention in the video you want to make sure your bike is in good condition and you're running parts suitable for the job, all my parts are chosen for their great strength to weight ratio, I wouldn't consider doing these drops if I was running super light components.
