Welcome to the video series "Jawari for Tanpura". In this series, I endeavour to explain the different aspects, tools, and processes involved in maintaining a used bridge, as well as the preparation and correct placement of a new raw bridge on a tanpura.
The first six videos introduce the basic ideas behind this remarkable bridge. I explain the principles involved, how they are realised in practice, and how the overtones and timbre of the vibrating strings can evolve into a fascinating and inspiring sound. Furthermore, I discuss the various materials used for tanpura bridges and how to clean and remove grooves that form on the surface through wear. These grooves inevitably cause distortion, imbalance, and disturbances that affect both the musician and the listener.
From video seven onward, I demonstrate fitting a new bridge: shaping the curve, cutting string slots, placing it on the soundboard (tabli), and checking the bridge angle to ensure the contact points via the feet fit as precisely as possible. We then continue with ensuring each string has full contact with the bridge to maximise the vibrational transfer into the instrument. I also explain how to control the open and closed sound according to the musician’s preferences. Additional topics include slipping bridges and how to secure the bridge in place while still allowing for easy removal during future maintenance.
